Aizu Shoami Tsuba

Dimensions: 8.1 cm x 76 cm Mimi 4 mm

A large katana-sized iron mokko-gata tsuba in the theme of aoi (hollyhock) and a folded fan. This tsuba has an NBTHK Hozon paper attributing it to the Aizu Shoami school. It is interesting to note that the planter is iron takabori and not an inlaid feature. It was carved from the iron plate, which would have required full work down of the face of the guard. The aoi leaves are done in silver and gold wash as well copper. The fan on the ura is copper with gold wash. A elegantly simple design that makes wonderful use of negative space.
