An Akasaka school maru-gata katana tsuba. This is iron sukashi in the theme of four kiri (paulownia) kamon. The carving is straight-walled in the Akasaka style. The shape of the ryo-hitsu are also an Akasaka trait. There are shakudo semigane in the ryo-hitsu, showing the skilled hand of the maker. Based on comparative study, this looks to be by the 4th or 5th generation and dates to the mid Edo period. Accompanied by a deluxe kiri-bako and an NBTHK Hozon paper that attributes it to the Akasaka school. A delightful example in excellent condition.
