Akasaka Tadanori Tsuba

NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon

Dimensions: 73 mm x 72 mm Mimi 5 mm

An Akasaka katana tsuba by Tadanori. This is an iron sukashi gaurd in the theme of nagekiri. Specifically, the "nagekiri" theme shows two paulownia branches with leaves fallen off. This is a classic motif, originating from Higo and often seen in Akasaka works. The leaf veins are rendered in kebori and the carving is straight-walled in the Akasaka style. This tsuba is 3-layer construction wich can be seen in the mimi. Linear tekkotsu and the forging patern can be seen clearly on the face of the mimi. There were two generations of Akasaka Tadanori. Both are ranked at the Ryoku level by Wakayama and highly regarded. They were active in the 1700s. Based on comparative study, this appears to be the work of the first generation. Accompanied by a deluxe kiri-bako and an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper. It is not common to encounter tsuba that have been awarded a Tokubetsu Hozon paper. This level is notably more difficult to reach for tosogu vs swords. An outstanding tsuba and a zaimei work by an important Akasaka craftsman.
