About this sword :   A charming and well-made koto tanto by the Bungo Takada smith, Takanaga. He was active around Tenmon (1532-1555). He is listed as a 15 point smith in Hawley’s book. As with many of the Bungo smiths of the Sengoku jidai, there is not a lot known about this maker. This school made outstanding fighting weapons that proved their excellence on the battlefield many times over. Their work style was "all-business"- suguha and robust / coarse jigane that cut well and was durable on the battlefield. The NBTHK Hozon paper is specific in that it states "circa late Muromachi period" on the paper. The blade is in good condition and has a nice old polish.

The koshirae for this blade dates to the Edo period and is in excellent condition. The lacquer work on the saya is gorgeous. The fuchi-kashira is shakudo nanako of warriors on horseback. The menuki matches. The tsuba is an iron "Namban" example. The iron fittings on the saya are decorated with gold nunome. The blue silk tsuka-ito is in wonderful condition. There is a tsunagi for the koshirae and a shira-saya for the blade.

This sword is nearly 500 years old and a delight to study. The koshirae is stunning on display and the whole package is full of alure and personality. A signed koto tanto from the waring states period with a stunning koshirae and a NBTHK Hozon paper.
