Echizen Kinai
Iron Sukashi Tsuba
Edo Period

Dimensions: 77mm x 76 mm
Thickness: 7 mm bull body - 4.5mm seppa dai

This is a fine example of the Echizen Kinai school. The patina has no damage and retains its attractive original deep luster. The sukashi work is skilled and cleverly done. The eyes of the bulls are done in ten zogan. This motif was made famous by Tokugawa Hideyasu. He was known as Yuki Hideyasu (March 1574 - June 1607). Hideyasu's koshirae is shown below as is a photo of Hideyasu's Kinai "bull" tsuba. The example at hand dates to the early - mid Edo period. It has a strong personality and the anatomically correct bull on the ura may reflect an owners aggressive traits. A textbook and fine example.
