Echizen Iron Sukashi Tsuba
NBHTK Hozon

Dimensions: 6.9 cm x 6.8 cm Mimi 9 mm

This is a sculptural iron sukashi tsuba of very thick construction. The modeling of the motif is three dimensional and well-rendered. The theme is that of omodaka or water plantain with gold nunome. The omodaka was used in the design of several kamon. The use of it on this tsuba is most likely an expression of the kamon of the original owner. This tsuba is unusually thick. The mimi is 9 mm wide. Tsuba intended for use with a pole arm are often smaller is size and very thick. It is possible that this guard was originally a naginata or yari tsuba. This tsuba is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon paper that attributes it as an Echizen school work. A clever design that is a delight to study.
