Goto Ichijo

Shakudo Kozuka "Fuji No Yama"

Goto Ichijo is a renowned master in the world of tosogu. Ichijo is ranked as Meiko 名工 by Wakayama. This is the highest rank used by Wakayama. In the history of Juyo tosogu, Ichijo's name appears 174 times.

This kozuka has a hako-gaki by Ikeda Takao (1850-1934) who was a student of Kano Natsuo. The hako-gaki reads as follows:

Fugaku no zu kozuka
ukin-ji iroe usunikuori
Ichijo saku Hokkyo zaimei
Meiji kinoe-tatsu shoka no hi Takao shirusu + in Ittosai

This kozuka was once in the collection of Mitsumura Toshimo (光村利藻, 1877-1955), also known as Ryushido (龍獅堂). Ryushido was a major sword and sword fittings collector of the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa eras. This Ichijo was an item in his personal collection. Please note Ryushido's seal on the bottom of the box, style of the nesting box and Ryushido's paper label.
