Hamano Menuki

Dimensions: 26 mm x 11 mm x 5 mm
32 mm x 15 mm x 5 mm

A charming set of kinko menuki. These have been attributed to the Hamano School by the NBTHK. This theme of this set is "Rain Begging Stele". A stele is a monument and in this case, a stone slab. The stele shown here is an actual monument that still exists in Japan and was rebuilt in the 6th year of Meiji. This stele was built to commemorate an event of rain begging performed by the haikai poet Takarai Kikaku in 1693 at the Mimeguri Jinja in current day Sumida-ku of Tokyo. His early mei was Enomoto Kikaku. He was born in 1661. His name (其角) is recorded on this menuki. The poem of Rain Begging is from his poem collection book of GoGenShu. The kanji on recorded on the stele of this menuki describes the event.

牛島三遶の神前に雨乞をするものにかわりて 夕立や田を見めぐりの神ならば 宝晋齋 其角

This set of menuki is finely crafted and in excellent condition. The bird is solid silver with gold eyes and feet. The stele is copper with gold highlights. The kanji are minutely carved with exacting detail. This set comes in a custom fitted kiri bako with a pillow. It is also accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon paper. A delightful set of Hamano kinko menuki
