An outstanding example of a Hamano Yasuyuk's work. This fuchi kashira was published in the 12th Kokusai Tosogu Kai catalog. Below is the description written for that publication:

Fuchi & Kashira
Signed; Hamano Hironori (modern reading Hiroyuki) (used name Yasuyuki as well)
Jurojin motif
Shibuichi-ji, kin and shakudo zogan
Circa; Edo period (19th century)

Hamano Yasuyuki (1763-1836) was a student of Hamano Naoyuki. He later married Naoyuki's daughter and became his son-in law. Yasuyuki was also a student of Hamano Noriyuki. Yasuyuki used the mei of Hiroykui on his later works, as is the case with this example. He accompanied his father-in-law on his journeys and worked in Osaka and Akashi. Eventually, he settled in his birth place of Tokushima, in Awa province, where he spent the rest of his days. He was employed there by the Hachisuka family who were the Daimyo of Tokushima.

The theme of this fuchi kashira is that of Jurojin. He is one of the seven gods of good fortune and a symbol of longevity. He is usually depicted as a long-bearded short man with a deer at his side, holding a scroll and a fan. There is also a crane and an old pine tree in the scene. All of these are symbols of a long, prosperous, and healthy life.

This fuchi kashira is made of shibuichi. There are several areas of inlaid shakudo and also gold nunome. Note that there are no places were the coloring overlaps onto the field from the various elements. The entire composition is rendered with exacting skill. The fine details of the carving, nunome and inlay, as well as the personality shown in Jurojin's face are key points of appreciation. Also, the condition of this set is outstanding. Having been carefully preserved over the generations, it appears the same today as it did the day it was made, nearly 200 years ago.
