Hayashi Shigemitsu

NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon

Dimensions:  88 mm T x 87 mm W

A fantastic iron sukashi Hayashi school tsuba by Shigemitsu. Matashichi was the shodai of the Hayashi line and Shigemitsu was his son, the second master of the school. Haynes records Shigemitsu's life span as 1652 - May 16th 1729. Some sources record it as 1667-May 16th, 1744. Shigemitsu is rated as Joko 上工 by Wakayama. This is the second highest level. Only a small handful of makers are ranked so highly. 11 works by Shigemitsu have passed Jyuo shinsa, 6 of these were mumei. This tsuba is a large kantana-sized tsuba in the theme of a gourd. It is a clever design and embellished with gold and silver zogan. The zogan is inlaid into precut channels and therefore, in an excellent state of preservation. Accompanied by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and a custom fitted kiri-bako.
