This is a large iron sukashi Higo School tsuba. This has a smooth and pleasing patina that feels wonderful in ones hands. The outer area is "pillowed" adding to the overall luxurious feel of the work. This has kibori and inlay work of the paulownia flower and vines. This is the same motif used in the well known Tokugawa Kiri kamon. A reflection of allegiance for the samurai that owned this for sure. Shakudo semigane are skillfully fitted to the ryo-histu. A nice example of Higo work.
