A late Edo iorn tsuba with shippo design elements. This is unpapered but looks to be Hirata work. This shows the trade mark shippo of Hirata, in this case with silver wire. There are also kiri and paulownia mons in copper, gold and iron. The overall balance of the design, occasional overlapping of the elements on each other and "behind" the mimi is nicely done. Hirata works are rare and highly desirable. A similarity adorned Hirata work by Hirata Nariaki was in the Christie's sale of the Lundgren collection. Please see a photo of that tsuba below for reference. A visually exciting and well made tsuba. A storage box is included.
