A classic Iyo Shomai school tsuba by Morimine. This is a katana-size mokko gata guard with a suaka ("pure copper") ji. This tsuba bears Morimine's full mei of "Yoshu Matsuyama ju chuko Shoami Morimine". This is an old kinko tsuba. Morimine was active around 1688-1704. He and Iyetake are recorded as the earliest Iyo Shoami makers and that they both had roots in the Kyo Shoami school prior to Genroku. There are refined carvings of kamon on the mimi of this tsuba and evidence that the ji was probably also decorated with kamon long ago. Black ursushi remains on spots of the surface. Four inome also decorate this work and invoke the persionaly of an old tachi tsuba. This comes with a kiri-bako and an NBTHK Hozon paper. Singed kinko tsuba of this age are rare. The opportunity to study specific branch work of the Shoami school is also exciting. A charming Iyo Shoami Morimine tsuba with high study value.
