蓑亀小柄
Minogame Kinko Kozuka

Dimensions: 9.7 cm x 1.45 cm x 7 mm

A charming Edo period shakudo nanako kozuka. This is in the theme of Minogame and ka-mon. Minogame means "straw raincoat-turtle". This name comes from the tails of the creatures that resemble a farmers straw coat. According to legend, they could live for thousands of years and the "tails" are actually sea weed and algae that have grown on the Minogame over hundreds of years. They are celebrated as symbols of long life and wisdom. There are depicted here with the hollyhocks, or "Aoi". These are seen in the kamon of several clans including the Tokugawa family. So the overall sentiment of the design is a wish of prosperity for the clan and it was probably presented as a gift originally. This Kozuka has not been submitted for shinsa but looks to be Goto work of the late Edo period. It is in excellent condition. There is no box included.
