Joshin was the third mainline master of the Goto school. He was born in 1505 and died in 1562. Among those who adore tosogu, Joshin's works have a special appeal for their strong and martial nature. Joshin was a samurai in addition to being a maker of tosogu. Many old books state that the spirit of the battle field can be felt in his works. The theme of this menuki is that of Fujin and Raijin, the gods of wind and thunder. They are powerfully rendered and show highly skilled workmanship throughout. The movement in the design is classically Ko-Goto as is the raven black color of the shakudo. This menuki passed NBTHK shinsa evaluation in 1963 and was awarded a Tokubetsu Kicho paper. The paper attributes this menuki specifically to Joshin. It should also be noted that the rank of Tokubetsu Kicho was one level below Juyo in 1963. This is also accompanied by a custom fitted kiri wood box. A wonderful example of Joshin's work that we are delighted to recommend.
