Ko Katchushi Tsuba
Hako-gaki by Kanzan Sato

Dimensions: 91 mm x 92 mm
Thickness: 3 mm

This is a Ko-Katchushi tsuba from the Muromachi period. Circa 1500. This is a large example featuring sukashi of ginko leaves. This work shows characteristics of Ko-Katchushi clearly. The thin well-worked plate and hammered finishing of the iron are representative of this group. Also, one can see folds in the face of the tsuba as well. Granular tekkotsu can be seen on the mimi. This has a custom made box with Kanzan Satos's hako-gaki. This hako-gaki was done in the fall of 1975 for Shigeko Numata, the wife of Mr. Kenji Numata, after his passing. He was a well known collector of tsuba in the mid 20th century. He worked with Dr. Kanzan Sato. Also he wrote the well known book "Tsuba Kodogu Gadai Jiten" (Dictionary of Artistic Themes on Tsuba and Kodogu). The hako-gaki states "Katchushi" as the attribution. At one time, that term was used indicate what we now refer to as "Ko-Katchuchi" with later examples being refereed to as "Edo Katchushi". This tsuba has no added ryo-hitsu and is in ubu condition. It is difficult to find a tsuba of this age with no modifications. A large ubu Ko-Katchushi tsuba with a custom made box bearing Kanzan Sato's hako-gaki.
