A shakudo naga-maru-gata Ko-Kinko tsuba. This is three-layer construction with the outer plates being shakudo and the inner plate being copper. The theme of this tsuba is "senmen nagashi" or "fans afloat". This motif was probably derived from a tale about a Muromachi-period shogun who accidentally dropped a fan from a bridge. There is also a custom of casting used summer fans into the river to celebrate the arrival of cooler autumn weather. This tsuba dates to the Momoyama period (1573-1615). A highly charming old tsuba in excellent condition. This is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon paper that attributes it to the Ko-Kinko school. Ideal for completing a special koshirae or for study of Ko-Kinko. nihontocraft@bellsouth.net
