Ko Tosho Tsuba

Prof. Arnold Frenzel Collection

Dimensions:  87 mm T x 86 mm W - Seppa Dai 4 mm, mimi 3 mm

A large and charming iron sukashi Ko-Tosho tsuba. The overall theme is the sun, moon and stars or "Sanko" design. Within the work, the hoshi mon with 7 dots is clear. This variant is the 七曜紋 Shichiyou mon. This mon is most well-known for its use by later generations of the Chiba family. Active from the 12th - 15th centuries. The two dots near the mimi are part of the Sanko design. The classic tapering profile of Ko-Tosho can be seen in this tsuba and amida yasuri evoke even more rustic charm. This tsuba was once in the collection of Mr. Nick Nakamura. The custom made kiri bako bears his seal on the outer edge. Please note the small wooden dowels used to make the box. A large and powerful Ko Tosho tsuba in excellent condition.
