Ko Dai Higo Tsuba

Dimensions: 77 mm x 76 mm
Thickness: 4.5 mm at mimi, 5mm ji

This is a later Higo schools tsuba or "Kodai Higo" tsuba. This dates to around 1800. The ji of this tsuba scuplted rahther than being flat or sloped. The area of the web near the mimi and near the nakago-ana is made lower that the mid section. The smooth iron surface and shape of the ji give a pleasing tactile quality in one's hand. The mimi is decorated in Higo stylle gold nunome. Most of the nunome is intact and it makes a pleasing contrast to the dark patina of the iron ji. Also, one can observe the Higo style of surface treatment by studying the inside walls of the ryo-htisu and nakago-ana. This comes with a custom made box as well. A nice example for study or mounting on a Higo style koshirae.
