武州国重鍔
Bushu Kunishige Tsuba
NTHK(NPO) Kanteisho

Dimensions: 7.8 cm x 7.5 cm Mimi 5 mm

A stunning mokko-gata kinko tsuba by Kunishige. This tsuba-ko worked in Edo during the 1700s. He sometimes signed Fujiwara Kunishige or Bushu ju Fujiwara Kunishige. His is known for working in hira-zogan such as the example at hand. The skill shown in this tsuba is impressive indeed. The inlay of shakudo veins and paulownia are exactingly executed as is the keibori. Even the mei is done in shakudo hira-zoagn. The design is carried around the mimi. The contrast of the copper ji and shakudo inlay creates a striking appeal. The copper has taken on a pleasing patina over the centuries and the nakago-ana shows evidence of several mountings. This tsuba was awarded a 78 point Kantiesho paper by the NTHK(NPO). An item must be of especially high quality to receive 78 points. 78 points or higher is the minimum requirement for submitting an item for Yushu Saku (equivalent to NBTHK Juyo). This also has a custom fitted kiri-bako. A high-papered ubu, zaimei, katana-sized kinko tsuba.
