A shakudo menuki set in the theme of roosters. These date to the late Edo period and look to be Kyo Kinko. These are rather large and were probably intended for use on a katana. These have accents in sliver and gold wash. The carving details include the feathers on the body of each bird and the texture of their feet. Roosters are symbols of courage and martial spirit. They represent of masculinity, a theme well-suited for a Samurai. Accompanied by a kiri-bako.
