Ko Kinko Menuki

Dimensions: 31 mm x 19 mm x 6 mm
32 mm x 17 mm x 6 mm

This is an old kinko menuki in the theme of Baku. The Baku comes from Chinese folk lore as the devourer of bad dreams. The Baku can be seen in Japanese art starting in the Muromachi period. This set is shakudo with gold wash. The gold wash and some of the carving details show wear from age and use. These have thin walls and one side retains a female post (the other side lost its post long ago). One can see a feeling of Ezo in these but they are probably Ko Kinko. An exciting set to study and submit for papers.
