About this sword :   A Kanbun shinto katana by Musashi no Kami Kiyosada. There were three generations by this name. They worked in Mino and their active periods span from Manji (1658-1661) through Jokyo (1684-1688). This katana has the representative sugata of Kanbun (1661-1673) times and shows a strong Mino flavor in its workmanship. Specifically, the hamon is nioi deki and with abundant togari shapes. This line of smiths is not well-known and only the Shodai is illustrated in the Tokotaikan. None of the three generations are listed in Fujishiro's Shinto-hen. The sword has not been sent for shinsa. The strength of the mei is ideal and there is no reason to suspect this mei is anything but genuine. This katana is suriage. It is in nice old polish with a few minor surface blemishes.

The koshirae that accompanies this blade dates to the Edo period and is handachi style. The fittings are matching shakudo ishime-ji in the theme of cloud dragons. The clouds and dragons are suemon zogan and done in copper, gold and shakudo. The tsuba is iron with a shishi dog in suemon zogan and peony design. The tsuka retains its original leather tsuka-ito and is in wonderful condition. An old sticker remains on the saya, probably from a sales room long-ago.

A long, zaimei katana with its original Edo period koshirae.
