This is a impressive large iron tsuba by Myochin Munechika. This tsuba features katatakiri bori in the the theme of the "The Four Gentlemen". This is a sophisticated theme borrowed from Chinese art wich refers to four plants shown on this tsuba : the orchid, the bamboo, the chrysanthemum, and the plum blossom. Munechika is a well regarded maker from the Myochin Shcool. He was active around 1850 and is ranked at the fifth level by Wakayama. Large zaimei works like this one are ideal examples to collect and study. Strong mei. The katakri-bori and uchikaeshi mimi of this tsuba are finely crafted and the patina is in great condition.
