明珍木瓜形鐔
Iron Kirikomi Mokko-gata Tsuba
with Shakudo Outer Plates

Dimensions: 6.6 cm x 6.3 cm Mimi 3 mm (Iron section)

An iron kirikomi mokko-gata tsuba with shakudo outer plates. This is an intriguing work in several regards and quite a delight to study. The center section is a tsuba by itself and the outer soft metal elements were introduced later in its life. We can ascertain this quickly by noting that the kozuka-ana of the iron tsuba has a sekigane fitted with the opening being a different size and shape than that of the outer plates. The iron tsuba appears to be Ko-Myochin work based on comparative study of other examples. This section probably dates to the late Muromachi period. Its conveys the austere and spartan charm of olden days that so many collectors adore. The shakudo outer plates are in the Umetada style. The nanako is quite skillfully done as are the kiri kamon. Especially please note the way the "mimi" of each has a tapered profile in combination with the asymmetrical lobes, showing an Umetada flavor. These plates were probably added in the Edo period to marry the whole to a koshirae of this theme. The skill set and material of the outer plates could not be more different than the iron tsuba, but the combination is harmonious. A fun study piece and fine work in all regards.
