About this sword :   This is an inexpensive katana because it is mumei, in old polish with scratches and the saya is a modern replacement. The quality of the blade is impressive and it has no kizu. The nioi guchi is bright and the jigane is vivid with no ware or kizu of any sort. The nagasa of this katana is 30 inches. It is difficult to find a katana that is this long and also healthy.

This large katana features an iori mune and high shinogi. The ji-hada is itame/mokume going to masame at the ha. The hamon is nie-deki, Soshu-like gonome midare becoming gonome with togari with a ko-midare suguha leading into the boshi. There are abundant ashi, yo, inazuma, sunagashi with both ji and ha nie. The boshi is slightly midare on both sides and ko-maru. The nakago is ubu, with kuri jiri, keisho o-sujikai yasurime, one mekugi ana, and maru mune. Soma Keishinsai Naomasa was a direct student of the famous smith, Naotane.

The koshirae are comprised of a modern replacement saya with wooden kurikata. The Hamano School, iron mokko gata tsuba is signed by one of the many tsuba makers within the school using the name, Toshiyuki, and displays the story of Urashima Taro.

Urashima Taro was a fisherman who caught a giant tortoise that begged to be released. He complied out of compassion and found that the tortoise turned into a beautiful princess, daughter of the dragon king whose castle is under the sea. Urashima Taro accompanied her to live a Rip van Winkle-like life ending in his return home only to find that an enormous amount of time has passed. The story ends sadly when he opens a box contrary to the instructions given to him. Urashima Taro, in silver, his fishing pole, in gold, and the tortoise are seen on the omote of the tsuba while the underwater castle of the dragon king appears on the ura.

The unusually long tsuka has same wrapped with black tsuka-ito. (damagesd from age) The menuki are silver shi-shi. Floral groupings of aoe leaves and stems adorn the shakudo fuchi and kashira. Also present is a one-piece copper habaki with koshiyujyo surface treatment.
