Higo Nishigaki Suaka Ji Tsuba

NBTHK Hozon

Dimensions: 7.2 cm x 6.7 cm x 5 mm

A Higo Nishigaki suaka ji kinko tsuba. This is such a wonderfully representative example of the Nishigaki school. The wave carving is a motif often seen in Kanshiro works. The shape of the ryo-hitsu are classic Nishigaki style as are the tagane-mei. The patina of this tsuba is undisturbed and undeniably charming. Based on comparative study, this is an early piece and most likely dates to the mid-Edo period at the latest. This is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon paper that attributes the work to the Nishigaki school. It also has a deluxe kiri-bako and pillow. An exciting Nishigaki kinko tsuba.
