応仁鐔
Onin Tsuba

Dimensions: 9.3 cm x 9.3 cm, 3 mm mimi

A large Onin tsuba from the Muromachi period. Onin tsuba originated during the Onin wars (1467-1469) and were made through the late Muromachi period. They are thought to be an evolution of katchushi tsuba, in the same manner as Kamakura-bori tsuba. Brass was an expensive material in the time of Onin tsuba. It is thought that such a decoration would have been welcomed as a hallmark of fine-craft. This example displays the school's text book ten zogan (dots) and the circle channel on each side would have held sen zogan (brass wire) long ago. This is a tachi tsuba and in ubu condition. There are no added hitsu. This is a large example at 9.3 x 9.3 cm and the nakago-ana is in wonderful condition for a work of this age. A great opportunity to own a 500 year tsuba from the warring states period.
