A late Edo period shakudo nanako tsuba by the Owari Kinko school. Works by this school are seldom encountered and often of excellent quality. These tsuba-ko were not related to the iron tsuba makers active in Owari in earlier periods. This was a group of artisans that worked in Owari to meet the demand for high end kinko fittings in the Bakumatsu period. The nanako work on this tsuba is breathtaking. Absolute perfection of the craft. The coloring of the web in gold is rather avant-garde and this fusion of new and old techniques is something we can observe in the Owari Kinko school. Please note that the floral patterns inside each frame do not repeat. Each one is different. The time and skill it took to produce this tsuba would have been significant. An amazing work of art and a complete delight to admire and enjoy. Accompanied by a NBTHK Hozon paper and a storage box.
