Sadayuki Tosho Tsuba
NTHK Kanteisho

Dimensions: 8.8 cm x 8.8 cm Mimi 5 mm

A large tosho tsuba by Sadayuki. He was a swordsmith active aronung Bunsei (1818-1831) in Kaga and also worked in Edo. Sadayuki's family name was Ogi and his swords were Mino in style. His ranking in the Tokotaikan is 2.8 million yen, which is a high mark among typical smiths of late Edo times. He had a distinct way of inscribing "saku". It is made in a elongated style, as tall as the two kanji of "Sadayuki" on the opposite side. An identical example of his mei can be seen in the AFU Nihonto Koza Kodogu vol on page 269. This tsuba has an old charm and masculine feeling. The overall aesthetic is delightfully austere. Some may note that this tsuba has an air older than late Edo. A perfect reminder that iron patina and finish are married to material and method much more than to age. Accompanied by an NTHK Kanteisho paper from 2004 and a kiri-bako. A papered, ubu, zaimei, kanata-sized tsuba by a well regarded maker.
