About this sword :   This is a Nanbokucho(1333 -1394) period katana that has been attributed to the Yamato Shikkake School by the NBTHK. This is one of the 5 main branches of the Yamato tradition. It is a healthy work in good condition as evidenced by the fact that it received a Tokubetsu Hozon paper. The blade also has a sayagaki by Tanobe Michihiro. The saya-gaki states "Yamato kuni Shikkake, O-suriage mumei, Jidai is Nanbokuchou, Yaki-ba has the characteristics of the school with a flavor of Michinaga style." Michinaga is a sub group of the Bizen Yoshii school. They moved to Izumo and made sugu gunome like this. The habaki that accompanies this blade is solid gold. Not gold wash or gold foil, it is actually solid gold and quite thick. This blade has a few ware as shown in the photos but this is not a distraction for one's appreciation of this 600 year old blade. This blade has two small kiri komi on the mune. These are nicks caused by blocking a sword from a downward cut to the head or neck in an actal battle. Of course, kiri komi are a badge of honor and they show that this blade was used on the filed and it worked very well. There is a lot of history that you can feel from a blade like this. Early main line daito are very desirable and this one boasts a Tokubetsu Hozon paper, Tanobe's sayagaki and a solid gold habaki.
