Yoshioka Yotsume Kamon Kozuka

Dimensions: 9.5 cm x 14 mm x 5 mm

A Yoshioka School kozuka in the theme of the Yotsume kamon. This kozuka is made of shakudo with a nanako ji. The two outer kamon are finished in sheet gold. Like the Goto school, the Yoshioka artists worked exclusively for the Tokugawa Shogunate. Many of their works were mumei because of their Tokugawa clientele. Their works have an air of class and formal restraint that is universally admired. This piece shows the tight and orderly "white" nanako (due to light reflecting so evenly from the tiny dots) that the school is known for.

The particular style of kamon is commonly known as the Yotsume ("four eyes") mon. The four eyes represent preparedness for attack from all directions. Also, the "four eyes" of this mon are believed to guard against evil.

The Yotsume kamon was used by the Uda Genji. They were a line of the Minamoto clan that were descended from Emperor Uda. Many of the famous Minamoto warriors, including the Sasaki clan used this crest among others.

This kozkua comes with a NTHK kanteisho paper issued in 2004. It attributes it as a work of the Yoshioka school of the late Edo period. It also comes with a custom fitted kiri-bako. Highly ideal for the study of Yoshioka as well as mounting on a formal koshirae.
