About this sword :   This is a katana by Tesshu Dojin Akimitsu. It was made as a dedication to the Kaneyama Jinja (shrine) in 1943. Akimitsu is a well-regarded Gendai smith. He received multiple awards for his excellent craftsmanship and is ranked at 1 million yen in the Tokotaikan. Akimitsu was born in Niigata prefecture in the 38th year of the Meiji era (1905). He began his apprenticeship in Tokyo at the Nihonto Tanren Denshujo under Kurihara Akihide in 1939. He became a Rikugun Jumei Tosho in 1942. Akimitsu was descended from Tesshinshi Terunaga who had served the Murakami fief. The horimono was done by Akitada. He collaborated often with Akimitsu in their careers. Akitada was well-known for his horimono and he also made tsuba.

This sword is long and with graceful koshi-sori. The horimono is impressive and being a blade dedicated to a shrine, we can see that great effort went into the crafting of this katana. The mei states "於大広前". This part of the mei records that this sword was made in the court yard in front of the Kaneyama Jinja "金山神社". The blade is in old polish. There are some minor scratches and surface blemishes as shown in the photos. There are no kizu and the blade is very healthy. It comes with a shira-saya, gold foil habaki and a storage bag. This Akimitsu received a Tokubetsu Hozon paper. It is rare for gendaito to receive a Tokubetsu Hozon paper from the NBTHK. This is a strong testament to the quality and condition of this katana. A wonderful work by Akimitsu, representative of his best effort and made for dedication to the Kaneyama Jinja. This is being priced by the consignee below its market value for a quick sale.
