Ishiguro Masayoshi is a famous name in the world of tosogu. There were two generations and both of them left behind amazing works that are highly sought after. The shodai Ishiguro Masayoshi is ranked as Joko 上工 by Wakayama. The nidai used both the name of Koreyoshi and Masayoshi. The nidai was ranked as Yuko 優工 by Wakayama. Between the two generations, 54 works have achieved Juyo status.

The shodai Masayoshi's first name was Shozo and he was the adopted son of Okamoto Yusen, a physician of Western medicine from Satsuma province. He was born in the first year of Anei (1772) and studied under Sano Naoyoshi and later, under the shodai Ishiguro Masatsune. He adopted the character for masa from Masatsune and yoshi from Naoyoshi (when Naoyoshi still signed his name with Masayoshi). He was employed by the Shimazu family, the daimyo of the Satsuma fief, and worked from their Edo residence.  He passed away in 1862. The first son of the shodai was Shuki (1807-1862). He was a painter and used the family name of Okamoto. The second son of the shodai was Koreyoshi and he became the nidai Masayoshi. He used the mei of Koreyoshi most his life and then used the Masayoshi mei after his father passed away in 1862. Koreyoshi's art name was also composed of characters from both of his masters, namely yoshi from his father and kore from the 1st generation Masatsune (when he signed with Koretsune).

This fuchi kashira is by the shodai Masayoshi. It bears his personal studio name of Jukakusai and the kao of the shodai. It also states "Made at the age of 65"(1838).

The craftsmanship shown in this set is amazing in all regards. The composition of the work, colors of the various metals and detail of the elements are fantastic. The birds have a "presence" as well as a personality - as if they are going to fly off the ji of the kashira. The empirical vaule of this mei can not be over-stated. The studio name of the shodai with his kao and statement of age is rare and important - to be used to judge the mei of other works. An outstanding set by a highly important maker. Accompanied by a NBTHK Hozon Tosogu paper and a custom fitting kiri-bako.
