About this sword :   This is a katana by the 3rd generation Mimasaka Kanesaki. Known as Nagata Hansuke. He was active around Genroku times (1688-1704) and worked in the Mino style. He is ranked as wazamono for the cutting ability of his blades. This katana has a cutting test on the ura. It states "Wakishita Kiriotoshi kore". This is a test cut performed on the arm-pit area of a cadaver. The blade is healthy and has no kizu. It is a very long sword even after slight machi-okuri. The sugata shows the shape of the times, with shallow sori and engineered for fencing style thrusting attacks. The blade is in old polish and there are surface blemishes as shown in the photos.

The blade has an old koshirae with it. This has seen honest use and shows its age clearly. The shakudo kebori elements are matching and this has a charming Kyo Shoami style tsuba. The tsuka has some damage to its foundation as you can see in the profile of its shape. Some lacquer losses and dings on the saya. The habaki is a special one. It is silver foil over copper with a battle flag in the center over bamboo. It fits very snug to the blade so we did not force it off for the photos.

This comes with an NTHK(NPO) Kanteisho paper that validates the mei, cutting test and the quality level of the blade. Cutting tests often can be very hard to obtain. Here is a great opportunity to own an affordable, long, mounted katana with a saidan mei.
