About this sword :

This is a rare and quite fascinating tanto by the well-known gendaito smith, Kawamura Kanenaga. This work features highly-skilled hori-mono of the Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry (三十六歌仙, Sanjurokkasen) on the ura. The detail of the work is mind-boggling and one needs a 10x loop to really appreciate it. The omote of the blade has a gunome midare nioi-deki hamon with togari mixed in. The boshi is omaru with a pointed return and the hada is itame combined with bold masame.

Kawamura Kanenaga's given name was Eijiro. He was born in 1887. He was the smith that engineered the stainless steel gunto. His was also renowned for his detailed hori-mono, as seen in the example. He passed away at the age of 57 in 1943.

The shira-saya of the blade has an integral wooden habaki and the saga-gaki is by Kawamura Kanenaga himself. A unique and highly entertaining gendaito showcasing the tagane skill of Kawamura Kanenaga.
