About this sword :   This is a gendai tachi by Uneo Naohiro. He was a skilled smith and worked in Tokyo. He is ranked at 1 million Yen in the Toko-taikan. This blade bears a Taisho date (August of 1915) and is a rare example of pre-Showa Gendai. The mune has the additional inscription of "48". This may indicate a part of an order or perhaps a serialized record. It is a finely crafted blade with outstanding jigane. There are no kizu and it is in high-quality Japanese polish. There are few light scratches, but they are easy to ignore.

This blade comes with its original shira-saya as well as a modern one. Both have a junction at the saya mouth and tsuka that is cut in the style of a court tachi (see photos). The writing on the original shira-saya wrapping is hard to read but it states that this was in a tachi koshirae for official use. Therefore, the tachi style cut on the saya/tsuka was used. The modern shirasaya was made in the same style and wonderfully crafted.

This blade is published in the book "Modern Japanese Swordsmiths, 1868 - 1945", by John Scott Slough on page 126 (see below). It also has a NBTHK Hozon paper issued in 2006. An exciting published and papered gendai tachi from the turning point era of the Japanese sword.
