A delightful shibuichi kozuka by the 9th main line Goto master, Teijo. He was the eldest son of Kenjo and was born in Keicho 8 (1603). His civilian names were Mitsumasa and Mitsutada. He worked for the Kaga-Maeda family on the invitation of his uncle Kakujo. Maeda Toshitsune (前田利常, 1594-1658), the lord of Kaga, gave him a mansion on the outskirts of Kanazawa. After the death of Sokujo he took care of his son and his four-year-old nephew Mitsutomo (who later became the 10th generation mainline master, Renjo). Teijo died on the 17th day of the ninth month of Kanbun 13 (1673), at the age of 71.
Teijo is ranked as Joko (the second level) by Wakayama. This is a very high ranking , reflecting the importance and skill of Teijo. Wakayama aslo states that the kanji used here for "Tei" (呈 vs 程) is rare among his works. This style of mei is also known to be Teijo's early mei. The kozuka features a playful rendering of a puppy on a smooth shibuichi ji. Teijo's work style was very diverse, and we see items like this work which show a machi-bori style and also many works in classic Goto style remain. This work is in wonderful condition for its age. Signed Goto works from the 1600s are seldom seen. Accompanied by a NBTHK Hozon paper and a custom fitted kiri-bako.
