Hamon : Ko-nie-deki suguha. The nioi-guchi is bright and tight. Fully consistent through the whole length of the ha.
Boshi : Ko-maru with a short return. The nioi guchi is clear and even throughout the boshi.
Kitae : Ko-itame covered in a sheet of fine ko-nie.
About this sword : Miyaguchi Toshihiro, also known as Miyauchi Yasuhiro, was a renowned gendai smith and famous as a Yasukuni Shrine craftsman. Ranked at 1.8 million yen in the Toko Taikan and listed in Fujishiro's Shinto-hen. His civilian name was Miyaguchi Shigeru and he was born in April 1897. His father was Yonezawa Kanjiro Masatoshi. After the death of his father, he became the pupil of Kasama Shigetsugu. He joined the Yasukuni Shirne forge at its founding in 1933 and left in December of 1936. He made about 500 Yasukuni-to. Special-order blades were signed by him with the name "Toshihiro". The blades he made for the Yasukuni forge were signed with his Yasukuni-name "Yasuhiro". He passed away on March 21st 1956 at the age of 59.
This is an outstanding tanto by Miyaguchi Toshihiro. This is a splendid utsushi of Kyo-mono. This tanto bears his special order mei of "Toshihiro" and the mei states "Nihonto Tanren Kai Setsuritsu Kinen Moku Me". This translates as "Nihon Tanren Kai (Yasukuni Shrine Forge) Establishment Commemorative Ceremony". Thus, we have a very special Tanto here. It was made to commemorate/celebrate the opening of the Yasukuni Shirne forge. The date of this blade is the 6th month of Showa 8 - the same time as the opening of the Nihonto Tanren Kai. A fine example of Toshihiro's work, in wonderful condition, excellent hori-mono and an historically important sword. It comes with NTHK(NPO) papers, shira-saya with wood habaki and a storage bag.
